Change takes Commitment

Small steps lead to big change!

Starting a new year is always filled with reflection and planning. We usually start the year with large goals and hopeful expectations.  However, hopeful expectations are one sure way to not sticking with the plan for too long. Hope does not offer commitment; it is a kind of a wishy-washy feeling that lacks any real drive or positive energy to create forward movement.

Also, the large goals we set seem lofty and often are not whittled down to the steps we need to get there. We have desires for change but when the change seems big our brain is going to present a lot of push back because it feels too big to achieve. After the initial excitement of the new year and thoughts of positive change weaken from time, our brain begins to work against us in achieving our goals. One way it works against us is by spinning thoughts of….

  • This is too hard

  • It is going to take a long time to reach that goal

  • Why are you putting yourself through this, we were just fine the way we were

  • There are too many unknowns so let’s stick with what we know

  • It is more comfortable staying in the same place rather than stepping into something new

  • Let’s just settle in and watch some movies and have some comfort food

  • Let’s divert our attention to something more enjoyable, how about shopping

Our mind is the only thing we need to manage in order to move into the desired outcome we are looking for.

How do we do that?

  1. We understand that our brain’s directive is to conserve energy, keep us alive, and stay in the familiar; therefore something new is to be avoided at all costs.

  2. We don’t let our own brain sabotage us from taking action and are therefore willing to feel the discomfort of doing something new.

  3. We break down our goals into manageable steps and stay patient with the process.

  4. When we step off course we don’t throw in the towel or make it mean something terrible about us. We  acknowledge and investigate why it happened and step back into the game.

This year set the goal, break it down into steps, put the steps on your calendar and follow the plan! Be prepared to not feel like doing the steps AND do them anyway. Override your brain's pattern to step away from discomfort and move toward it instead. When you COMMIT to your goal and step into the plan you will find all the help you need along the way!!
