Good to Know
Our brain is constantly taking in information and sorting it. Sorting so it can neatly store it . Most of the time this information is stored and never tapped into which coincides perfectly with the brain’s directive to conserve energy. It sorts the information and tucks it away until it is necessary or useful. Kind of like when we place things in a storage bin for later use or for the next season.
It is just so useful to know that this is normal for our brain to do. It helps us understand how things can get so messed up in our minds. It is pulling things off the storage shelf and trying to reuse it in a situation we are in today because it is easier (requires less energy) not to have to think of a new solution.
However, when we are using the old stuff stored in the bin often it doesn’t fit correctly or it has gone out of style and doesn’t work anymore. This is what happens when we are operating in today’s situation with yesterday’s solution - it doesn’t fit but our brain thinks it does. It thinks the old solution has worked thus far; therefore, the brain is not interested in coming up with a new solution. It is more than happy to tap into the old way of doing things because it requires very little energy.
How do we know it is no longer serving us, simply put, we no longer feel good about putting the old stuff back on or reusing it. And, when we don’t feel good, we know that solution is not relevant to our current situation. It is time to go shopping and find something that fits.
When we understand this, we stop thinking something has gone wrong. We understand the useful behavior our brain has devised in order to take in and store ALL the information. The challenging part is replacing the old with the new. Of course our brain is going to have a hissy fit about this because that sounds like work and work means energy depletion. This is why we so often quit before we reach the desired goal or destination or upgrade we are looking for in our lives.
So -
Stop beating yourself up when things are not working.
Start looking for solutions that fit today’s situation.
Create new patterns of doing and repeat the desired pattern until it is so well worn that the brain does not have to exert the necessary energy to run the new program.
Just this basic understanding of how our brain works is enough to begin noticing, challenging, and changing the way we do things so we can create the results we are looking for!
